History of Pawnbroking
The first records of pawn loans can be traced back at least 3000 years to ancient China as well as Greek and Roman civilizations. This practice continued in different societies around the world and appealed to different classes, including the nobility. Known royals who have frequented pawn shops include King Edward III of England in the 14th century. Queen Isabella is also reported to have pawned her royal jewels to finance Christopher Columbus’ voyage to the New World.
How We Got Our Symbol
St. Nicholas, the patron saint of pawnbroking, is reported to have left three bags of gold to a poor man, so he could afford to marry off his daughters and save them from slavery or prostitution. These bags became the first symbol for pawnbroking. Throughout the years, the pawnbroker’s symbol transformed from three bags of gold to three gold spheres hanging from a bar that we recognize today.
